The Seif family (Mona Seif and Alaa Abd El-Fattah)

Many "Arab Spring" revolutionaries seemed at first to be secular western liberals. But scratch the surface and you often find just a different type of jihad lover.

The Seif family of Egypt were jihad lovers posing as "secular liberals". They fooled many people, including me, and, years later, the British government.

Egyptian communist Ahmed Seif El-Islam is the father of two Egyptian revolution activists:
- Mona Seif
- Alaa Abd El-Fattah
Mona Seif and Alaa Abd El-Fattah were praised by human rights bodies around the world as fighters for democracy against dictatorship. Many people were fooled into thinking these two held liberal values.
But it eventually emerged that they are hideous supporters of Islamic terrorism.

Mona Seif is an open supporter of Islamic terrorism against Israel.

Mona Seif calls for jihad against Israel.
On 30 Apr 2013: "we support the resistance of the palestinian nation against israel."
Again on 30 Apr 2013: "i support a nation's right to resist occupation! Sending me tweets calling me a terrorist wont change the fact that real terrorist is Israel".
On 16 Nov 2012: "you don't ask an occupied nation to stop their "Resistance" to end violence!!! SHAME ON YOU!"

The Martin Ennals Award ("the Nobel Prize for human rights") disgraces itself by including in the 2013 finalists the pro-jihad Egyptian Mona Seif.
Mona Seif was nominated by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Front Line Defenders.
There was an outcry and (perhaps partly because of that) she did not win.

Mona Seif has not changed.

Alaa Abd El-Fattah

Mona Seif's brother Alaa Abd El-Fattah is, unbelievably, even worse.
He fools us into thinking he is a liberal:
- He fooled me and many others for a while.
- I had him on my list of Egyptian liberals.
- He was jailed by the regime in 2006 and I called for his release on my website.
- I linked to freealaa.blogspot.com
We discover what he is:
- Eventually, in 2014, I discovered that he supports jihad against Israel.
- Correction: I thought I discovered this in 2012, but on re-checking it was actually 2014. I apologise for a number of tweets saying it was 2012.
- In June 2014, I still thought he was a liberal.
- In Oct 2014, I discovered what he actually is. (Image datestamps show I found out in exactly Oct 2014.)
I very much regret calling for the release of this guy from prison.
By Feb 2015, after discovering the above, I was saying: "Can't they jail him again?"
Well they did. They jailed him again in 2019. The Egyptian dictatorship in fact jailed him for most of 2013-2025.

The uproar about Alaa Abd El-Fattah, Dec 2025

Completely ignoring what I and others had found out years before, successive British governments campaigned to free him.
In Sept 2025, he was released, and allowed fly to Britain in Dec 2025.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer celebrated the release of this violent antisemitic racist and welcomed him to the UK.
Then his vile tweets were discovered and all hell broke loose. There was national uproar and calls for him to be immediately deported. Amazing how two successive governments could not do the basic research that I and others had done over a decade earlier.

Twitter is broken, 2016 to 2022: I am on X (formerly Twitter) at markhumphrys. Twitter was a great place for debate before 2016. You could meet everyone in the world, and argue about ideas. Starting in 2016, Twitter became increasingly broken. It became full of reporting and bans and censorship. In 2019, Twitter even started shadowbanning me for no reason that was ever explained, or could be appealed. By 2022, everyone was looking for a better place to debate.

Twitter is saved, 2022: In 2022 Elon Musk bought Twitter and started to end the censorship. It looks great so far. Twitter (renamed to X) seems to be saved.

Campaigns to silence me: I now have no less than two entries on the Banned List at Academics for Academic Freedom. This is a list of "individuals who were banned from speaking at universities in the UK and Ireland, or faced campaigns to silence them, or sack them for their views." The two campaigns to silence me were the BLM protests in 2021 (unsuccessful) and the Israel debate in 2024 (partially successful, in that it drove the debate off campus).
